The Inside Story: Nomination Ends in Violence
The Inside Story: Nomination Ends in Violence
/ By Jed Yoong
(Machap, 3 April 2007 - Tue) A group of rowdy MIC Youth members led by its National Youth Leader injured two DAP members and assaulted two journalists.
S. Vigneswaran, 39, who is also a Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to the Youth and Sport Ministry, led an unprovoked assault on a group of Indian DAP members as they were walking to lunch at about 11.15am after the nomination of the Machap state by-election ended.
The MIC Youth was allegedly offended by DAP's cries earlier at the nomination rally insulting their President Datuk Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister.
An argument between the two Indian groups turned physical when the MIC Youth begun battering DAP with flagpoles and even threw stones.
Assistant editor of The Rocket (Chinese) -- the DAP newsletter -- Thing Siew Sheun, who witnessed the incident spotted some police personnel and shouted for help.
Only with police intervention did the bloody brawl come to a halt.
Two DAP Senawang members were injured. K. Kinnis, 42, technician, sustained head injuries on the left and his right cheek was grazed. While A. Vijayan, 24, lorry driver, was only mildly injured on his right cheek. They lodged police reports immediately after the incident.
Two journalists from two Tamil daily newspapers were also assaulted while photographing the incident and have lodged police reports. One was verbally assaulted while the other was grabbed by the neck by Vigneswaran.
Police personnel present at the incident have denied witnessing the event.
Two male MIC Youth members have been arrested and detained for further investigation.
However, they have not been remanded despite the presence of a multitude of witnesses, including police.
ENDS.

The BN samsengs are already at work trying to intimidate and spoiling for a fight.
DAP has everything to gain and nothing to lose in this by-election. Although local issues appear to be the top priority in a mixed rural constituency such as Machap, no harm in DAP raising national issues since there are many of these. Kit Siang will know which ones to highlight for maximum impact in this by-election campaign.
Get Anwar and other top Keadilan leaders like Azmin, Ezam, Syed Husin to canvass the Malay vote for the DAP, particularly if UMNO/MCA propaganda continue to depict DAP as anti-Malay, anti-Islam, anti-NEP, anti-ketuanan Melayu, etc.
Since this is Lim Guan Eng's first campaign as sec-gen, UMNO/MCA propaganda will try to run him down as anti-Malay,dictatorial, etc.
One good way of countering this is to get Keadilan leaders like Anwar and Wan Azizah to revive issue of Guan Eng going to prison to defend honour of 15yr old Malay girl raped by Rahim Thamby Chik several years ago.
Don't think of doing well or winning as Machap is an MCA stronghold. Just go in the campaign, give them everything you got and close your fingers.
DAP can definitely do better this time than in the last general election. That factor itself alone will agonize MCA/BN who are under extreme pressure to make DAP candidate lose his deposit.
Good luck.
must win, no other choice!!
Let Machap be the start of the revolution to oust the non-transparent, non-accountable, arrogant BN.
To the voters of Machap if what you want is more of the abovementioned BN, please, please vote for BN on the 12th. Don't complain and lament and whine when promises are not kept, toll and petrol and prices of essential goods are hiked. Don't complain when we see more white elephants like PutraJaya, twin towers, rotating tower and bullet trains.
But if you have ever given a thought of a better future for your children and their children, better governance, a more transparent & accountable goverment vote DAP. The least the DAP can do is to check the excesses of the BN.
